Pros: We are a Classical School Pre-K thru 12 - This software has made my job easier and saves me time. The transition from our old system to Mandarin was amazing. I was happy with the ease of implementing the new system and tech support patiently guided any questions. I can't say enough good things about tech support - I love the speed & ease of inputting new records and barcodes for classroom sets of books in minutes. Physical barcodes are easily printed - a budgetary savings. I love the visual search - parents and students can link to ebooks, public library resources, college prep, homework helps, audio books, whatever I want to create a link for assisting research and resources - the world is at our disposal. Parents can easily email and send book requests. An economical high quality services for private schools with small library budgets. Technical support is amazing 24/7 and they are great teachers. Training library help is very easy. There is no need to purchase MARC record as the record fetch has most titles and it is very easy to create your own record. I highly recommend this software for ease of use and ability to expand circulation options. We separate textbooks and general library but it is all in the same catalog. Teachers easily check out their classroom textbooks. I am re-cataloguing sets of elementary books and tech support makes global call number changes saving the time of bringing up each title to change the record.

Cons: What is there not to like? I love this software!!!

It is a great marketing tool of academic resources that we can easily put within student/parent reach. I love the customized look I can give to my home page. Mandarin Library is a fun and intuitive program that meet budgetary constaints while allowing me to expand in new ways.

We are loving Mandarin M5! I love the autocomplete feature and advanced filtering! Excellent additions for searching. I enjoy personalizing the look of the catalog. The addition of the recommended reading and gallery make the catalog much more user friendly and enjoyable for the students.

While I have found Mandarin M5 to be greatly improved there are still changes and enhancements that can be made. I have been truly surprised and excited by Mandarin's willingness to listen to the users of their products and work on solutions!

We are enjoying the new M5 functionality as we are learning - quickly - to navigate the new interface, exploring implications and applications of all the new "toys" like the new filters on the left tool bar - which I love. Being able to limit results to fiction v. nonfiction is an absolute gift. Being able to show only those available titles is especially helpful in active collections. I like it but it I were in an elementary or public library collection - it would be indispensable.

My teacher aide [who only has a year of working in the library under her belt] and my secretary [who only has a few months] both took to M5 with no stress. I see that it is already easier asking them to help me with work in the catalog with the new interface.

It has been exciting to see changes that our Steering Committee has brainstormed, discussed and tested come to fruition; it was well worth the wait.

Mandarin was one of the first software companies to provide display of different languages to smaller libraries. Many years ago this capability existed for university libraries but not high school libraries.

I am a librarian in a high school that teaches in three languages - English, French and Hebrew. I needed this capability and Mandarin has consistently continued to provide this option.

They update their software on a regular basis, provide excellent , very responsive, and creative technical support. They will design reports for you if what is there doesn't quite work.

M5 is a new design, clear, easy to use, and supplies all the functions that a high school library needs. There are direct connections to the Web, and news feeds, and the ability to design the interface as you want it. I highly recommend this system.

American Heritage School is an independent, nonsectarian, and co-educational day school for grades Pre-K through 12 with 2 campuses.  We have 4 Media centers with combined resources that include 400 computers and 60,000+ individual resources and are continually increasing in numbers and quality. I have been employed at the school since 2005 as Information Technology Librarian and Database Administrator. 

My favorite part of being in the Media center is that we can guide students with their Research projects. We work and lead our students hrough the “information highway”.  At the end of the day "we feel sense of accomplishment to see them succeed". The students who graduate from our school return and share their success stories with us.

I have been administrator of Mandarin Library Automation since 2005. The best thing about the software is its ease of use. Our students also feel that it is very user-friendly and they are able to search on OPAC with great ease.

We had a webinar with Debbie Clinton that was very useful to start using the functions of the circulation and cataloging tools.

After use, we could write down our doubts and clarify them in a webinar with Holly. They have been very helpful.

The online workshops are excellent.

The program is very friendly and we learn quickly. If we have some doubts we email Debbie or Holly and they immediately respond.

Free webinars are great tool for training and respond our questions. Debbie sends us a manual that she prepared to explain how to import records to our catalog.

It has been a great experience and we love OPAC because the students can search in their homes and came to the library with their requests searches.

We are a district of 42 elementary, middle and high schools. I am responsible for keeping the Mandarin program running in all 42 of these schools.

After using the same program for 20 years we moved to Mandarin M3. It was a whole new way of cataloging and circulation for us and the people at Mandarin were with us every step of the way. Their quality of tech support has not changed since 2002.

In 2007 we upgraded to Mandarin Oasis. The students, teachers, and parents love it. All the schools' databases are accessible from our district website.

This enables the parents to take an active part in helping the student select appropriate books for pleasure reading as well as book reports, etc. 

I love it because it is no longer necessary to install software on each computer needing access to Mandarin OPAC. At one point that was in excess of 400 computers. 

Circulation in Oasis is very user friendly. Navigating through Cataloging is pretty straight forward. 

The upgrade to Oasis was quick and required very minimal down time.

Dear Colleagues,

I am a disciple of the products from Mandarin, and have been for years! At my current school we have just migrated from Follett to Mandarin's 'new' product, which is called OASIS. In particular (and in relation to an earlier comment), I particularly like that the OPAC (which we are also using successfully as a WebOPAC) is not case sensitive, does not require the children/students to type in the whole title or words of the title in order, produces an authority list to browse from if no hits are found, uses 'see' and 'see also' and has a fantastic add-on feature from Syndetics that allows the searcher to see the book cover. You can also catalogue websites and launch into them from the OPAC.
