ZServer allows anyone with Internet connectivity and Z39.50 client software to access your catalog. ZServer is Z39.50 level three compliant.
With ZServer, any library can be part of a virtual union catalog, which can be a viable alternative to a centralized database by allowing any library to search and view records at any other Z39.50 enabled library. A virtual union catalog can be created by installing ZServer on all library automation servers and commercially available Z39.50 software at all client workstations. When a search is executed, results are gathered from an individual collection, or the collections of all libraries in the virtual union catalog. Results are returned with item locations. Performance depends on the number of sites, the number of circulation and patron workstations, and communication infrastructure (T1 lines are recommended).
